After many iPhones (particularly old models) users worldwide start complaining about the phone’s unexpected slow performance, the company had issues an official statement accepting the fact that it is deliberately slowing down their old iPhones claiming to offset the battery problems. After releasing this statement, users expressed their disrespect for the company on social media while many of them even felt like humiliation.
In the latest update under this row, the chairman of a U.S. Senate committee John Thune who handles the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee had asked Apple Inc to answer the questions and disclose more details about the slowing down of their old iPhones. In a letter sent by him on 9 January to the CEO of Apple Tim Cook says that “the large volume of consumer criticism leveled against the company in light of it’s admission suggests that there should have been better transparency.”
Following this, he also asked the company to offer rebates to customers paying full price for the battery replacement and consider making free battery replacements via their service centers. Also, he wants to know whether, the largest IT company in the world by revenue Apple, had notified their customers about this undisclosed feature in software or not. The official letter also asked if such software was earlier used in their models or not. All these questions must be answered by the company latest by 23 January. It will be interesting to see what will be the next move by Apple in this controversial slowing down of old iPhones.
WHAT COMPANY SAID ON THE ISSUE ?
Getting into the details of the statement, the California-based company had said that the iOS with the help of internal software does this to prevent the issues arise due to the aging of lithium-ion batteries. It is believed that after long use of smartphones and battery gets older, it loses it charge as a result may shut down during low percentage when stressed too much. Apple’s iOS software prevents that problem by slowing down the performance so that the battery wouldn’t need to give more power to the phone. According to Apple’s website, the user might notice lags and issues like longer app launch time, lower speaker volume, lower frame rates while scrolling, etc to name a few. After the issue got widespread attention and people started talking about it, Apple apologized for it. In it’s latest official statement released on 28 December 2017, the company has said :
“We know that some of you feel Apple has let you down. We apologize… Our goal has always been to create products that our customers love, and making iPhones last as long as possible in an important part of that.”
“At Apple, our customers’ trust means everything to us. We will never stop working to earn and maintain it. We are able to do the work we love only because of your faith and support — and we will never forget that or take it for granted.”
According to Apple, the latest iOS 11.2.2 will help users know the problems and fix the issues a little bit but is afraid to release any permanent solution to the same.
Facing some serious criticism over this issue, Apple have to think the other way to deal with the situation as many people are started believing that the company is doing fraudulent work from their users worldwide just to make users switch to the newer model and ultimately made a revenue. Therefore, it would be quite difficult for the company to make their users happy and trustworthy.
