After the issue got widespread attention and people started talking about it, Apple apologized for it. In it’s latest official statement released on 28 December 2017, the company has said :

“We know that some of you feel Apple has let you down. We apologize… Our goal has always been to create products that our customers love, and making iPhones last as long as possible in an important part of that.”
